What is PNF?

PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) is a type of advanced flexibility training that involves both muscle contraction and stretching. It was created by neurophysiologist Herman Kabat and physical therapist Margaret Knott at the Kabat-Kaiser Institute from 1946 to 1951.

It did, however, prove to be useful in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems over time. Today, it’s being employed in general therapy and mainstream gyms to improve flexibility.

How and Why does it work?

There are three main techniques used in PNF. These include hold-relax-swing, contract-relax-antagonist-contract (CRAC), and Contract-relax (CR). They refer to the steps taken in muscle stretching.

Typically, PNF involves the following:

• Stretching of one or more muscle groups.
• Remaining in the extended position to contract the muscle group against resistance. (Done with the help of a therapist)
• Stretch out the muscle group again

Stretching with PNF stimulates the proprioceptors, which speeds up the neuromuscular system. Simply put, PNF deceives the nervous system by resisting pressure so that the muscles can relax and give a deeper stretch. Consider this: When stretching, you literally push your joints and muscle fibers to their limit. This increases the stretch tolerance in these muscles.

When you stretch, you trigger the inverse myotatic reflex, a defensive reflex that soothes the muscle to prevent injury. PNF pushes the muscles to their worst limit. It sort of tells the brain, “I don’t want that muscle to rip,” and it sends a signal to the muscle to relax a bit more than it typically would. This overall reduces stiffness and increases flexibility.
